Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB) on Sunday, marking the launch of the world's largest workspace. The purpose of this grand endeavour is to shift the entire diamond trading business from Mumbai to Surat. Impressive Features of the Surat Diamond Bourse
Situated in the Diamond Research and Mercantile (DREAM) City, the SDB covers an extensive 66 lakh sq ft area, forming a greenfield project sprawling across nearly 700 acres. Comprising nine 15-storey interconnected towers, the bourse offers offices ranging from 300 sq ft to 7,5000 sq ft.
Surpassing Global Standards: Surat Diamond Bourse's Monumental Size
The key features of the Surat Diamond Bourse include its immense size, surpassing even the Pentagon, the largest office space globally, according to Delhi-based Morphogenesis, the architectural firm behind the design. With a capacity for approximately 4,200 offices of varying sizes, the bourse accommodates all aspects of the diamond trade, including selling rough and polished diamonds, diamond manufacturing machinery, diamond planning software, certification services, lab-grown diamonds, and more.
Vision of Prime Minister Modi: A Hub for Trade, Innovation, and Collaboration
In addition to the trading facilities, the SDB hosts 27 retail outlets for diamond jewellery, catering to both international and national buyers. The bourse is expected to become a modern global hub for the diamond and jewellery business, covering both rough and polished diamonds. Prime Minister Modi emphasized the significance of the Surat Diamond Bourse, highlighting its symbolic representation of Surat's dynamic diamond industry and India's entrepreneurial spirit. He envisioned the bourse as a central hub for trade, innovation, and collaboration, contributing to economic growth and generating employment opportunities.
Additional Facilities and Economic Impact
The Surat Diamond Bourse boasts additional features, such as a 'Customs Clearance House' for Import-Export, a jewellery mall for retail business, and facilities for international banking and safe vaults. With an investment of ₹3400 crore and occupying 35.54 acres of land, it is poised to become a global centre for rough and polished diamond trading.
Global Recognition: Surat Diamond Bourse as a Trading Powerhouse
This monumental building, with its 4,500 interconnected offices, surpasses the Pentagon in size, making it the world's largest interconnected structure. The bourse is expected to attract traders from 175 countries, providing a global platform for polished diamond transactions. The trading facility is anticipated to generate employment for around 1.5 lakh people, significantly boosting the diamond industry in Surat.
